Solutions for Springfield's Tongue Tied Patients

Improving your child's oral health and function

Does your child have a tongue or lip tie?

Tongue ties can cause more than life-long speech impediments; they can make it extremely difficult for babies to latch on while breastfeeding, resulting in colic, reflux, excessive gas and so much more. As your child grows, a tongue tie can lead to food aversions, picky eating, increased gagging and spitting out food. Left untreated, it can lead to speech impediments, sleep apnea and facial deformities.

Does your baby struggle with these issues?

  • Unable to properly latch onto the breast
  • Reflux or colic
  • Gagging, choking or excessive spitting up
  • Milk dribbles from corners of mouth
  • Hiccups
  • Nipple pain or injury to Mom
  • Long feeding times or constant feeding

How does a tongue tie affect older children?

Brand new babies aren’t the only ones who can have tongue tie troubles; older kids and their parents may have their own set of issues to deal with, including:

  • Trouble speaking clearly
  • Lack of tongue mobility
  • Inability to play wind instruments
  • Mouth breathing
  • Disproportionate growth of the lower jaw
  • Recessed chin
  • Increased tooth decay
  • Snoring
  • Forward head posture
  • TMJ pain / jaw joint issues

If these symptoms sound familiar, a lip or tongue tie may be to blame. Many people qualify as candidates for treatment, from infants and children to adults. We’ll get you or your child in quickly for a consultation.

Personal, Same-Day Treatment from Dr. Baines

A tongue tie occurs when there’s an issue with the lingual frenulum, which is the attachment of skin underneath the tongue. It forms before your baby is even born. The process of fixing it is sometimes referred to as a frenectomy.

Similarly, a lip tie deals with the skin attachment under the upper lip. When these pieces of skin aren’t long enough or don’t move properly, there can be problems with breastfeeding or potential growth and developmental issues.

Dr. Baines offers compassionate, understanding care to make treatment simple and comfortable for both the parent and child. Consultations and treatment commonly occur in the same visit for children under two. Here’s what you can expect:

Step 1: We’ll take all the time we need to get to know you and your family during a one-on-one consultation and thorough evaluation. This is where we determine who is a part of your bodywork team – a lactation consultant, chiropractor, SLP, Myofunctional Therapist, Craniosacral Therapist and/or Pediatrician.

Step 2: It’s photo time! This is the step when we take any necessary photos to provide a deeper understanding and education about your situation to make the best decision possible for you and your family.

Step 3: Dr. Baines uses high-tech, yet extremely gentle, CO₂ laser technology to release the lip and tongue ties in Springfield with precision, minimal discomfort and faster healing.

Please know that for children under two, we always do our best to get your child’s procedure completed the same day as the evaluation. Parents are welcome in the room to provide comfort and reassurance.

Get the Upper Hand on Growth and Development

Left untreated, a tongue tie or lip tie can lead to significant problems with eating, speaking, facial growth, jaw development and breathing.  Those children who battle forward head posture and recessed chins often develop jaw problems or sleep issues. Every parent wants to set their child up for success, and it’s never too late to help. In many circumstances, we can safely and effectively perform a frenectomy on both infants and adults.

Following the procedure, we will provide you with aftercare stretches to help prevent the possibility of the skin reattaching in the future. Dr. Baines will create a post-procedure program tailored to your child that is easy to understand and follow, no matter how busy life is. Contact us to learn more about how we can help you and your child break free from their tongue tie for the higher quality of life they deserve.
